Behind the Lens

Although neither of my parents are photographers, I believe I inherited my photography skill from them. My love and appreciation for the outdoors comes from my father. A true outdoorsman. Him and I would spend hours hiking and camping in the backcountry of Vancouver Island when I was a kid, always with the bribe of cheezies and chocolate bars. This is one of my favorite things about photography- it brings me to some of the most beautiful locations in the Comox Valley. I am always on the hunt for the next amazing location. My creative spirit and love of people comes from my mother. I believe creativity can by expressed in many forms. For my mom, her creative outlet is sewing and interior design. And as for her love for people, I recall grocery shopping with her as a kid and after stopping and talking with MANY people, I asked her, "mom do you know everyone in the world?" I believe connecting with my clients and ensuring they feel comfortable is an important part of capturing them at their most natural.

I am a self-taught photographer and started learning on a film camera. Over the years I have enjoyed doing photoshoots for friends and family. Being a mom to two boys has given me access to (sometimes not-so-willing) models. My boys have given me the chance to improve as a child photographer. I understand to create the best photo opportunities is by ensuring tiny humans are happy and engaged. At a photoshoot, I often let the little ones set the pace and incorporate play, breaks, and props into the session (and I'm not above the occasional bribe). Magical photo opportunities present themselves at unlikely moments, and when it does, it is my job to have my finger on the shutter.

When people ask what is my favorite style of shoot is, I tell them I can not choose! I love the variety that comes with photographing a variety of people with different relationships while attempting to capture different moods. The variety of shoots allows for a greater range of creativity and I love seeing a range of different outcomes.
